Hohlestein

Hohlestein is an archaeological site and mountain peak in Ahnatal standing at 476 meters high. Its summit contains a natural basin roughly two meters across and 1.2 meters deep, enclosed by a stone wall at the base.

Pottery fragments and stone walls show that people lived here during the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. Medieval fortifications were later built on the site, showing its importance across different historical periods.

The summit shows signs of ancient religious practices, supported by bronze discoveries from that era. People likely gathered here for ceremonies or to honor their dead in prehistoric times.

The walk starts from the Triffelsbühl parking area near the B 251 highway, with a four-kilometer circular trail leading to the summit. The route is easy to follow on foot and suitable for most visitors.

Bronze objects discovered on the summit suggest this place held special significance for Celtic peoples. These artifacts date to around the third century BCE, when Celtic groups inhabited the region.
