Burgruine Igelsburg

Burgruine Igelsburg is a castle ruin that sits on a steep basalt hill surrounded by forest and overlooks the surrounding landscape. The remains consist of stone foundations and wall fragments that show where towers and residential buildings once stood.

The castle was originally a fortification that existed from around 1100 and was inhabited by noble families for several centuries. Gradual decline occurred as the castle became less important over time and was eventually abandoned.

The ruins sit in a location that has been used by people for centuries, showing how castles in this region were part of everyday life. You can understand here how a fortress controlled passage through the valley and shaped life in the surrounding villages.

The site is reachable on foot via hiking trails that wind through the surrounding forests and are well marked. It is advisable to wear sturdy shoes, as the trails can be muddy or uneven depending on the season.

An old pottery workshop with traces from the 1300s shows that not only warfare but also craftsmanship took place within the castle walls. This workshop reveals a different side of castle life, away from medieval romance.
