Hohes Gras, Mountain summit in Hesse, Germany
Hohes Gras is a summit in the Habichtswald hills of northern Hesse, reaching around 615 meters and topped by an observation tower. Several marked walking trails connect different starting points to the peak.
The Habichtswald area around the peak served for centuries as a hunting ground for the Landgraves of Hesse. The observation tower on the summit was built in the 19th century, when such towers became popular across German hill regions.
The observation tower at the top draws locals and day-trippers who come to look out over the Habichtswald area. On clear days, the view reaches far across the hills and forests of northern Hesse.
The summit can be reached on foot from several parking areas along the edge of the Habichtswald, all connected by marked trails. Solid footwear is helpful since paths can be muddy after rain.
The name Hohes Gras means "tall grass" in German, suggesting the summit once had open grassy areas that have since been covered by forest. This shift from open ground to woodland happened gradually and reflects how the landscape of many German hill regions has changed over the past few centuries.
