Fernmeldeturm Habichtswald, Communication tower in Essigberg, Germany
Fernmeldeturm Habichtswald is a concrete broadcast tower in the Habichtswald nature park in Hesse, reaching 186 meters tall. It sits on a wooded ridge near Kassel and sends out radio programs to the surrounding region.
The tower was built by the Deutsche Bundespost in 1975 and 1976 to meet the growing need for radio broadcasts in northern Hesse. It has remained in operation ever since and still carries out the same basic function today.
The tower stands in the Habichtswald nature park, a forested area that locals use for walks and day trips. From several hiking trails, the tower is visible above the treetops and works as a reference point in the landscape.
The tower is not a public building, as it is an active broadcast site that is generally not open to visitors. Those who want to see it can use the hiking trails in the nature park, from which the tower is clearly visible above the trees.
At 186 meters, the tower is one of the tallest concrete structures in Hesse, even though it serves a purely technical purpose. On clear days, it can be spotted from several kilometers away across the hilly landscape of northern Hesse.
