Hirzstein

Hirzstein is a mountain summit in Habichtswald in northern Hesse, rising 502 meters above sea level. The peak sits within dense forests and features a viewing platform equipped with telescope poles for exploring the distant landscape.

The area developed as a vantage point in a landscape used by people for centuries, particularly from the 18th century onward when basalt extraction began nearby. This mining activity shaped the region and eventually led to the creation of the current nature park.

The viewing platform includes telescope poles with information placards that help visitors identify distant geographical features across the landscape. This setup transforms the summit into a place where you actively explore the surrounding world.

Multiple hiking trails lead to the summit, with parking facilities available near the mountain base accessible via the A44 motorway. The routes are well-marked and suit visitors of varying fitness levels.

The nearby Devil's Wall, located about 450 meters northeast of the summit, was exposed through basalt quarrying in the 18th century and reveals the region's mining heritage. This rock formation stands as a reminder of the area's industrial past.
