Dönche, Nature reserve in Kassel, Germany
Dönche is a nature reserve in Kassel covering 170 hectares with meadows, ponds, reed beds, and beech woodlands across several districts. The landscape includes open grasslands and wooded areas that provide different habitats for wildlife throughout the year.
The area was first recorded in 1368 as Tonche and later served as military training grounds beginning in 1870. Following the withdrawal of German armed forces, the land was designated as protected.
Local schools and the University of Kassel use the area for outdoor biology lessons and research projects. It has become a place where students experience nature firsthand and develop understanding of how ecosystems work.
Three marked circular trails of varying lengths offer different visit options for different abilities. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for weather conditions that can change throughout the seasons.
Two rivers, Dönchebach and Krebsbach, meet within the protected area and create diverse living spaces for animals. This water network supports a greater variety of species than found in surrounding areas.
