Antikensammlung Kassel, Ancient art museum in Kassel, Germany.
The Antikensammlung Kassel houses around 4,800 objects from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, displayed within Wilhelmshöhe Palace. The collection includes sculptures, vessels, bronze objects, and other artifacts that show how these civilizations developed their arts and crafts.
Landgrave Moritz of Hesse-Kassel started building this collection in 1603, establishing the foundation for gathering ancient works. The group grew significantly after 1688 when Hessian troops brought marble sculptures back from Greece.
The collection displays ancient coins, pottery, and sculptures that reveal how Mediterranean societies organized their economies and created art. Walking through the galleries, visitors see objects that reflect the daily life and values of people from thousands of years ago.
The museum is located within the UNESCO World Heritage Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and can be accessed through several entrances. Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the palace and surrounding gardens requires walking.
The entire collection was moved to Paris in 1806 during French occupation and only returned to Kassel in 1815. This episode became a defining moment in understanding how important and fragile such collections are.
