Zoo am Rammelsberg

Zoo am Rammelsberg is a private zoo in Kassel spread across roughly two hectares of land with diverse animal species on display. Visitors encounter alpacas, parrots, flamingos, iguanas, and farm animals throughout the grounds.

The zoo was established about four decades ago by Horst Schwenk and his wife Edith as a family venture that grew into a valued local institution. Their initial project expanded over time to become what visitors enjoy today.

School groups regularly visit to encounter farm animals like goats up close, making this a valued place where urban children experience direct contact with living creatures. This connection helps young visitors develop an interest in the natural world.

The zoo opens in the afternoon on weekdays and throughout the day on weekends, with free entry supported by donations. Visitors should plan for a relaxed walk through the grounds and dress appropriately for outdoor time.

The grounds include an automobile museum featuring restored classic vehicles, particularly DKW F8 models from past decades. This unexpected combination of animals and cars offers visitors an unusual mix of interests in one place.
