Villa Bayer, Erkrath, Protected villa in Erkrath, Germany.
Description
Villa Bayer is a two-story residential building in Erkrath defined by a distinctive round corner tower and a central gable in the roof section. A long loggia supported by columns runs across the ground floor, giving the structure an open character on one side.
History
The building was constructed between 1898 and 1899 for Arthur Meckel, a wealthy businessman. In 1910, Friedrich Bayer, son of the founder of Friedr. Bayer & Comp, purchased the property and gave it its present name.
Culture
The villa reflects the building style that wealthy industrialists favored in the region around 1900. Visitors can still see this preference for grand forms and spacious rooms expressed in its architecture.
Practical
The building underwent major renovation work from August through December 2010 and now serves as office space. Since it functions as a private business location, access for casual visitors may be limited.
Did you know?
The original property was surrounded by two farms, a guest house, and separate buildings for gardeners, coachmen, and foresters. This array of outbuildings reveals how many staff members and support structures were needed to maintain a wealthy household.
