Kleine Feldhofer Grotte, Archaeological cave site in Neandertal, Germany
The limestone cave measured 3 meters wide, 5 meters long, and 3 meters high, positioned 20 meters above the valley floor in a limestone gorge.
In August 1856, miners discovered a skull cap and skeletal bones in the cave, which became the first recognized specimens of Neanderthal humans.
The excavation site continues to provide scientific evidence about early human development, contributing to the understanding of European prehistoric populations.
A 25-meter observation tower allows visitors to reach the original cave height, offering a perspective of the archaeological discovery location.
The mitochondrial DNA extracted from two bone samples found in the cave underwent complete sequencing in 2009, revealing genetic information about Neanderthals.
