Ober-Schönmattenwag extends across 695 hectares at an elevation of 238 meters, situated between the valleys of Dürr-Ellenbach and Ulfenbach rivers.
The settlement received its first written mention in 1012 as Spumosum Stagnum, meaning foaming waters, and belonged to the Lords of Hirschhorn in the 13th century.
The village transformed into a Protestant community in 1830, creating a distinct religious identity from its Catholic neighbor Unter-Schönmattenwag.
