Jungfernsprung, Rock formation in Dahn, Germany
Jungfernsprung is a massive sandstone rock formation rising approximately 70 meters above ground level in the heart of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The structure displays layered rock faces and natural formations that become visible as you walk around it.
During medieval times, the rock formation served as a strategic observation point for monitoring the surrounding castles of Alt-Dahn, Grafendahn, and Tanstein. Its elevated position allowed for viewing large portions of the region.
The name comes from an old local legend about a maiden who jumped from the peak and landed safely below. Visitors can see the spring at the base, which is central to this regional story.
The site is accessible via two main hiking trails: the Felsenland Sagenweg and Dahner Rundwanderweg, which offer different difficulty levels. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow time to explore the various walking routes around the formation.
From a summit cross at about 280 meters elevation, visitors can see three separate castles and the entire spa town of Dahn spread below. This panoramic view is a major reason why hikers make the challenging climb.
