Castra of Heilbronn-Böckingen

Castra of Heilbronn-Böckingen is an archaeological site containing the remains of a Roman military fort with visible foundation walls, storage structures, and fortification ditches. Thousands of artifacts have been unearthed here, revealing how the installation was organized and operated.

The fort was built in the 2nd century and served as a military station along the Neckar-Odenwald Limes, the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. The installation was abandoned as Roman boundaries shifted and military priorities changed.

The pottery fragments found here reveal how Roman soldiers lived and worked within the fort's walls. These discoveries help us understand daily routines and the craft techniques used during this period.

The site can be visited to see excavated foundations and on-site museum displays of artifacts found during the digs. It is best to wear comfortable shoes, especially after rain, and allow time to explore the sprawling grounds at a leisurely pace.

Among the findings are remains of workshops where soldiers made their own weapons and tools rather than just purchasing supplies. This reveals how self-sufficient and productive the settlement truly was.
