St. Märgen's Abbey

St. Märgen's Abbey is an Augustinian monastery located in the southern Black Forest region at approximately 900 meters in elevation. The baroque complex features a distinctive abbey church surrounded by forested hills and accessible through multiple pathways within the landscape.

The monastery was founded in 1118 as Cella Sanctae Mariae and faced multiple reconstructions following fires over the centuries. The final restoration in 1907 brought the buildings to their present-day condition.

The abbey church remains a major pilgrimage site for visitors seeking spiritual connection within the Archdiocese of Freiburg. The space draws people throughout the year who come to experience the long tradition of Marian devotion that shapes religious life at this location.

The monastery grounds are crossed by numerous walking paths that provide access to the surrounding Black Forest landscape. The site also offers recreational opportunities, including natural swimming areas nearby.

The sculptor Matthias Faller worked as a baroque craftsman at the monastery and created intricate wooden carvings that survive today. His works reflect the skilled artistic tradition that flourished at this location.
