Großsteingrab Neu Gaarz 2, Neolithic dolmen near Rerik, Germany
Großsteingrab Neu Gaarz 2 is a prehistoric stone burial chamber located near Rerik on Germany's northeastern coast. The structure is built from large boulders arranged to form a covered passage grave with stone walls and a capstone roof.
The burial chamber was built during the Neolithic period between 3100 and 2950 BC as part of the Funnel Beaker culture. Generations of the same family group likely used this place for burials over many centuries.
Archaeological excavations in 1967 revealed 380 artifacts including tools and vessels, indicating the tomb served multiple generations for burial practices.
The site sits about 1 kilometer from Rerik on the road toward Meschendorf and is freely accessible to visitors year-round. Information boards at the location explain the history and construction of the ancient tomb.
The covering stones of the grave feature a total of 20 carved bowl marks, with eight appearing on the main capstone and twelve on the supporting stones. These markings may have held ritual or symbolic importance for those who used the tomb.
