Kloster Gerode, Benedictine monastery in Eichsfeld, Germany.
Kloster Gerode is a Benedictine monastery in the Eichsfeld region of Thuringia, made up of a church, cloister buildings, and former convent structures grouped around interior courtyards. Gardens and woodlands surround the whole complex, giving it a setting distinct from the open farmland nearby.
The monastery was founded around 1100 by Count Widelo and his son Rudiger, who granted it extensive lands that secured its early survival. Over the following centuries it went through periods of decline and renewal that shaped the buildings standing today.
The monastery is now home to the Weg der Mitte community, which runs courses and seminars for people interested in spiritual practice. Visitors often stay for several days to take part in these programs and experience the quiet of the grounds.
The monastery sits about a kilometer south of Weißenborn-Lüderode and is easiest to reach by car. Overnight rooms and meeting spaces are available for those planning to stay longer, but booking ahead is recommended.
The grounds hold an unusually wide range of tree species, rare for a monastic site of this size. Several hiking trails start directly from the property and lead out into the surrounding Eichsfeld countryside.
