Burg Allerburg

Burg Allerburg is a castle ruin on a steep hillside at 323 meters elevation in the Sonnenstein region. The oval courtyard layout still shows the remains of a round tower built on the original stone foundations.

The fortress was built around 800 CE for the Allerberg nobility and first appears in written records around 1266. This early date shows how important the position was for controlling the region.

The chapel inside was dedicated to Saint Michael and served the regional lords as a place for prayer and burial. The space shows the religious role this location held for the people who lived here.

The hillside is reached by forest paths that became easier to walk after forest clearing in 2018. However, fallen trees still block some passages, so wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time for exploration.

Between 1916 and 1930, Baron von Minnigerode tried to turn the ruin into a summer home, but inflation stopped the work. This ambitious plan failed during a time of economic crisis that halted many building projects across Germany.
