Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue, Nature reserve in Riedstadt, Germany
Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue is a nature reserve along the Rhine River with floodplain forests, wetlands, meadows, and former river channels across about 2440 hectares. The landscape contains different plant communities adapted to wet conditions and supports species that depend on river dynamics.
An 1829 Rhine River shortcut transformed this former peninsula into an island and created a new river course alongside an old loop. The landscape has since evolved through natural flood cycles and seasonal water dynamics.
The environmental education center at Hofgut Guntershausen displays exhibits about local nature and leads guided tours through the floodplain. Visitors can learn how river landscapes work and why this area matters for the region's ecology.
A network of hiking trails connects different areas with 14 information pillars offering QR codes for digital content about the landscape. Spring and autumn are ideal times to visit when water levels support wildlife viewing without making paths too difficult.
Black kites hunt regularly over the meadows here and serve as a sign of the area's healthy bird population. Rare plant species thrive in the shifting wet conditions, occupying spaces where they cannot survive elsewhere.
