Schwedensäule, Historic memorial column in Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue Nature Reserve, Germany

The Schwedensäule is an obelisk topped with a crowned Swedish lion sculpture holding a sword and an orb. The column rests on a base decorated with four spheres and stands within a nature reserve.

The memorial was built in 1632 by order of King Gustav Adolf to mark the Swedish troops crossing of the Rhine River during the Thirty Years War. It commemorates a major military operation that left a lasting impact on the region.

The monument is named after the Swedish soldiers who died and were buried here during the conflict. The site became a place of remembrance for these losses and shows how deeply this event remains part of local memory.

The memorial is accessible via marked pathways through the nature reserve and can be visited year-round. Information panels at the site explain the construction and historical context of the monument.

The Swedish lion sculpture atop the column points toward the original Rhine crossing location and the Swedish cemetery. This intentional alignment creates an invisible connection between the monument and these nearby historical sites.
