Lone valley, Geological formation and archaeological site in Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The Lone Valley extends from Geislingen an der Steige to Giengen an der Brenz, bordered by limestone cliffs that rise above a wide floor covered in meadows. The river flows through this formation while numerous caves have formed within the rock walls.

People inhabited the caves in the valley during the Old Stone Age and Middle Stone Age, as archaeological findings prove. These early inhabitants left traces in the form of tools and burial sites that date back thousands of years.

The caves in the valley served as shelters for early people who left behind stone and bone tools. These sites reveal how our ancestors lived and worked within this landscape.

Visitors can explore the valley by following the river's course and examining the various caves that are accessible. It is advisable to wear proper footwear as the ground can be uneven and sometimes wet.

The Vogelherd Cave in the valley yielded extraordinary discoveries, including figures carved from mammoth ivory and tools that show how ancient human artistic activity is. These objects rank among the oldest known artworks in the world.
