Marienkirche, Gothic church in Bielefeld, Germany.
Marienkirche is the largest church in Bielefeld and shapes the city skyline with its twin facade towers. The interior features a 52-meter-long hall layout with a three-bay choir that clearly reflects the Gothic building style.
Construction of this church began in 1293 under Count Otto III of Ravensberg and his wife Hedwig. The building was not completed until 1512 after more than two centuries of work.
The Marienaltar displays a painted triptych from 1400 with 30 detailed scenes reflecting French artistic influences of the period. The figures and religious imagery tell stories that worshippers have observed and revered for centuries.
The church is open for regular worship services and access is normally available during daytime hours. Visitors should note that active community events may affect access to certain areas.
After bombardment destroyed the original towers in 1944, the reconstruction in 1966 introduced new designs that differ from the earlier baroque spires. These modern towers now shape the building's appearance and remind visitors of the city's wartime losses.
