Oberst-Herrmann-Kaserne, Military barracks in Eutin, Germany.
Oberst-Herrmann-Kaserne is an active military barracks in Eutin, in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, made up of several buildings used for housing, training, and daily operations. The site is home to a reconnaissance unit of the Bundeswehr and functions as a working garrison.
The site was established in 1913 as a garrison for a Lubeck infantry regiment and changed names and functions several times over the following decades. A reconnaissance unit was stationed here in 1961, giving the barracks the military role it still holds today.
The name of the barracks honors a specific officer from the reconnaissance branch, which gives the site a strong identity within that military tradition. On certain occasions, the garrison opens its doors to residents, creating a direct connection between military life and the town.
This is an active military installation, so public access is not possible without prior authorization. If the garrison holds open days or public events, these are the only occasions when visitors can enter the grounds.
The barracks received its current name only in 2021, honoring Colonel Werner Herrmann for his contribution to the development of German reconnaissance troops. It is relatively rare for an active garrison to be renamed after someone so recently recognized.
