Reicherskreuzer Heide, Protected heath ecosystem in Brandenburg, Germany

Reicherskreuzer Heide is a protected heath ecosystem in Brandenburg comprising sandy plains with heather vegetation, birch groves, and pine forests spread across the landscape. The terrain alternates between open heathland sections and wooded areas, creating a mixed environment typical of this ecosystem type.

The site served as a military training ground and firing range for Warsaw Pact forces until 1992, after which it transitioned to nature conservation. This conversion from military use allowed the preservation and restoration of one of Brandenburg's remaining heathland areas.

Shepherds with mixed flocks of sheep and goats actively manage the heath by grazing across the landscape to maintain plant diversity. You will notice the open character of the terrain is shaped by this traditional practice, which keeps the heathland from becoming overgrown.

Observation towers and educational trails are available for visitors, though some heath sections require caution due to past military activities in the area. It is wise to stay on marked paths and use the information provided to navigate safely.

The reserve is home to 18 endangered species listed on Brandenburg's Red List, including specialized birds, butterflies, and reptiles. These creatures have adapted specifically to the sandy environment and the particular conditions of the heathland ecosystem.
