The Schleuse Werries lock chamber extends 102 meters in length and 11.5 meters in width, featuring steel sheet pile walls and metal-skinned gates.
The lock construction took place from 1930 to 1933 as part of the Datteln-Hamm Canal extension project, with initial costs reaching 3.7 million Reichsmarks.
The lock system represents German engineering excellence in water management, enabling vessel navigation between different water levels in the canal network.
The lock operates Monday through Saturday from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sundays from 9:00 AM to noon, accommodating vessels with maximum drafts of 2.50 meters.
The 2004 renovation introduced modern control systems and new gates, costing 4 million euros while maintaining the lock's original structural design.
