Schloss Bischofstein, Lengenfeld unterm Stein, Baroque château in Lengenfeld unterm Stein, Germany.
Schloss Bischofstein is a Baroque château in Lengenfeld unterm Stein featuring symmetrical proportions and stone walls characteristic of 18th-century ecclesiastical architecture. The structure displays the typical layout of a summer residence with formal design elements typical of that period.
The Archbishop of Mainz, Johann Friedrich Karl von Ostein, commissioned the construction of this summer residence in 1747 under architect Johann Christoph Heinemann. Stone from an earlier fortress on the site was repurposed for the new building.
From 1907 to 1942, the castle operated as an educational institution following Hermann Lietz's reformed pedagogical principles, shaping numerous students' lives.
The castle now functions as a care facility and is not open to visitors. You can view the exterior from a distance and enjoy the surrounding countryside.
During World War II, German artist Käthe Kollwitz resided in the castle, and her lost graphics were later discovered in the attic of nearby Zella monastery.
