Schloss Molsdorf, Baroque castle in Molsdorf district, Erfurt, Germany

Schloss Molsdorf is a Baroque palace near Erfurt featuring classical facades, water moats, and extensive gardens surrounding the main structure. The complex spans several hectares and displays typical Baroque characteristics with its symmetrical design and architectural details.

A water fortress originally stood on this site and was transformed into a Baroque palace in the early 17th century. Further renovations during the 18th century shaped the building into its current form.

The castle served as the residence where the wealthy von Giech family displayed their art collections and lived surrounded by luxury. Walking through the rooms today, you can see how the aristocracy furnished their spaces and what objects mattered to them.

The palace is located about 4 miles (6 km) from Erfurt's city center and is accessible by public transportation or car. Comfortable shoes are recommended since there are many rooms and stairs, and you should plan extra time to explore the gardens.

Hidden within the palace is a rare collection of erotic artworks from the 18th century that reflects the private interests of its former owners. This unusual display offers a fascinating glimpse into the lesser-known side of Baroque tastes.

Historic locations in Thuringia

Thuringia contains a notable variety of historic sites, from medieval castles on wooded heights to baroque palaces in landscaped parks. The region preserves Romanesque monastic complexes such as Paulinzella, Renaissance residences including Wilhelmsburg in Schmalkalden, and significant collections like the Lindenau Museum in Altenburg. Beyond architectural landmarks, Thuringia offers geological features: the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes are considered the most colorful show mine in the world, the Barbarossa Cave near Rottleben is one of Europe's largest anhydrite caves, and the Morassina healing caves in Schmiedefeld have served therapeutic purposes since the 19th century. Cultural institutions range from technical museums such as the Ziegenrück hydroelectric power museum to the Apolda bell foundry museum and botanical installations like the Japanese garden in Bad Langensalza. Historic transportation systems including the Oberweissbach mountain railway, which has covered a vertical rise of 1,060 feet (323 meters) since 1923, complement the offerings. Natural monuments such as the Dragon Gorge near Eisenach, a narrow ravine with rock walls reaching 33 feet (10 meters) in height, and viewpoints like Leuchtenburg above the Saale valley combine natural and cultural experiences.
