Wendelstein transmitter, Communication transmitter on Wendelstein mountain, Bavaria, Germany.
The Wendelstein transmitter is a communications tower on Wendelstein mountain in the Bavarian Alps that rises 60 meters into the air. The red and white striped tower stands at 1,794 meters elevation, towering above most surrounding peaks.
The transmitter was founded in 1954 and became Germany's highest main network broadcasting station. It has adapted through decades of technological change while continuing to serve Upper Bavaria.
The transmitter allows millions of people across Upper Bavaria to receive television and radio broadcasts. It connects communities in a mountainous region where signals would otherwise be difficult to reach.
Visitors can reach the transmitter via hiking trails or the cable car that runs regularly from the mountain base. The access is well-developed, though reaching the top requires either good fitness or using the mechanized option.
A specialized control center sits roughly 100 meters below the summit, hidden inside the mountain. This underground facility protects sensitive equipment from extreme weather while housing all signal management operations.
