Stadtwald Göttingen und Kerstlingeröder Feld, Protected forest area in Göttingen, Germany.
Stadtwald Göttingen and Kerstlingeröder Feld is a protected nature reserve containing the largest connected limestone beech forest in southern Lower Saxony across roughly 1200 hectares. The area features various woodland types and wetland zones with different kinds of habitats.
The Kerstlingeröder Field served as a military training ground from 1928 to 1992 after centuries of agricultural use stretching back to medieval times. This long history shaped the landscape and protected area we see today.
The forest contains remnants of old farming landscapes with meadows and pastures that show how people in the Göttingen region once managed the land. These features still shape the character of the area today.
The area features marked trails that visitors can follow through the forest while protecting rare butterflies, bats, and bird species in their habitats. Accessible on foot, the reserve offers opportunities for nature observation and quiet walks.
A wildlife crossing bridge over the B27 highway was built in 2013 to allow wildcats and other animals to move safely between forest areas. This structure shows how infrastructure and nature protection can work together.
