Standortübungsplatz Speyer, Military training area in Speyer, Germany.
Standortübungsplatz Speyer is a military training ground located between the city of Speyer and the municipality of Dudenhofen, covering parts of both administrative areas. The site consists of inland sand dunes, open sandy ground, and shooting ranges spread across this shared territory.
The land was sold by local authorities to the German state in 1936 for a token sum, marking the start of its use as a military site. It has remained in military hands ever since, with its basic character largely unchanged.
The training ground is known locally as one of the few remaining inland dune landscapes of its kind in the Rhine plain. Visitors tend to notice the open sandy stretches and the dry vegetation that give the area a look quite different from the surrounding farmland.
Parts of the area can be walked on marked paths when no exercises are taking place, but red flags signal that access is not allowed. It is a good idea to check before heading out, as the schedule changes regularly.
The site holds a landscape protection status and contains FFH zones where rare plant and animal species are found. This means that military use and nature conservation share the same ground, an arrangement that is unusual in Germany.
