Tempelhofer Feld, Former airport turned urban park in Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Germany.
Tempelhofer Feld is a former airport site in Tempelhof-Schöneberg now used as a public park. The wide paved runways alternate with grassy fields and provide space for sports, recreation and different leisure activities throughout the year.
The site served as Berlin Tempelhof Airport until 2008 and gained worldwide attention during the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1949. After the airport closed, the space opened in 2010 as a public recreation area for city residents.
The space takes its name from the former airfield and is now used by Berliners for grilling, kitesurfing and community gardening. On weekends you see families with homemade kites and groups picnicking across the open expanse.
You can enter the grounds through several gates along the perimeter fence, and orientation across the open space is easy due to clear sightlines. Access is barrier-free and the paths suit wheelchairs, strollers and bikes of all kinds.
The original runway markings and lights remain visible and recall the flight operations. Some visitors walk or cycle deliberately along these lines, following the traces left by former aircraft.
