Teufelsturm, Medieval watchtower in Menden, Germany.
Teufelsturm is a round stone tower with thick walls, to which a half-timbered house was added in 1700. This structure combines the medieval fortification with living spaces added later.
The tower was built in the 14th century under Elector Walram as part of Menden's defensive fortifications. Over time it lost its military purpose and was converted to residential use.
The tower houses a carnival museum that displays how regional carnival traditions form an important part of local celebration and community identity.
The museum maintains regular opening hours for visitors to explore the carnival collection and historical displays. The location is easily accessible and well connected by public transportation.
During witch hunt periods, the tower served as a detention facility, giving it the name Duivelsturm, meaning Devil's Tower. This darker history shapes how locals view the structure today.
