Wildenstein - Hexenturm

Wildenstein is a castle ruin perched on a cliff at approximately 810 meters above sea level overlooking the Danube River in the Swabian Alb region. The structure was originally built in the 13th century and occupies a strategic location with steep terrain leading down to the river below.

The site first appears in records from 1077, though archaeological evidence indicates the fortification took shape during the 13th century. The structure underwent various modifications and expansions over time as defensive needs changed.

The interior walls display Renaissance murals depicting scenes from legends and sagas that reflect the artistic interests of past inhabitants. Visitors walking through the rooms encounter these painted narratives that reveal what captivated the people who lived here.

The site is open to visitors and operates as a youth hostel with accommodations available, and guided tours can be arranged upon request. Sturdy footwear is advisable as the steep paths and uneven surfaces throughout require careful navigation.

A wide moat surrounds the fortress and forms a formidable defensive line that must be crossed using narrow bridges. These water-filled ditches served not only as protection but also demonstrate how seriously the builders took their fort's security.
