Zerbster Stadtmauer

Zerbster Stadtmauer, Medieval city walls in Zerbst, Germany

Zerbster Stadtmauer is a fortification system extending about 4 kilometers around the historic center, featuring preserved gates, battlements, and defensive structures. The wall segments show different levels of preservation and contain various architectural details from different building periods.

Construction began in 1430 and finished in 1434, then the structure was modified in 1571 with the addition of covered walkways and firing positions for firearms. These upgrades reflected how defense methods changed as weapons technology advanced.

The five original gates, including the northeastern Heidetor, connected the city to neighboring territories and medieval trade routes. These entrances still shape how people experience the town today.

Walking the entire perimeter takes you through parks and green areas where you can see the defenses up close. The paths are easy to access and let you explore different sections at your own pace.

The Kiekinpott tower was built in 1396 by local residents and still stands near where the old princely water castle once stood. This shows how ordinary people took part in building the city's defense.
