The Roman Catholic Diocese of Mainz extends across 7,692 square kilometers in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, with its central cathedral dedicated to Saints Martin and Stephen.
Founded in 304, the diocese achieved metropolitan archdiocese status in 780 and later transformed into a regular diocese in 1801 under the Archdiocese of Freiburg im Breisgau.
The diocese manages the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Mainz and several educational institutions, including the Episcopal Willigis-Gymnasium and Liebfrauenschule.
The diocese consists of 20 deaneries with 319 parishes served by 504 priests, maintaining regular services and pastoral care for approximately 728,200 residents.
The Mainz Cathedral houses a reliquary shrine containing historical artifacts of regional saints, representing centuries of religious devotion and cultural heritage.
