Ginkgo in Rödelheim, Natural monument in Rödelheim, Germany
The Ginkgo in Rödelheim is a natural monument in Frankfurt's Rödelheim district and stands beside the Petrihaus in the Brentanopark area. At approximately 18 meters tall, it is a remarkable specimen of a tree species that is quite uncommon in Germany.
The specimen was planted around 1750 and later came into the possession of merchant Georg Brentano during the time of the Solms-Rödelheim territory. This origin makes it a testament to early European fascination with this Asian tree species.
The tree grows beside the Petrihaus, a historic meeting place where Frankfurt residents gather to observe the old specimen and reflect on its long presence. Its connection to Goethe's literary work has made it a symbol of the region's appreciation for this Asian species.
The tree is best accessed during regularly organized events by the Petrihaus association and on the last Sunday afternoon of each month from spring to autumn. Visitors should note that a protective zone of roughly 10 meters surrounds the specimen and must be respected.
This specimen holds the status of Germany's oldest of its kind and draws attention through its remarkable size and advanced age. Its existence dates back to a period when this Asian tree species was still extremely rare across Europe.
