Katzenturm, Medieval defense tower in Bad Salzuflen, Germany.
Katzenturm is a round stone structure with arrow slits and a conical roof positioned at the highest point of Bad Salzuflen's city fortifications. The tower displays typical medieval defense features with thick walls and minimal openings designed for protection and surveillance.
The tower was built during the second half of the 15th century as part of the city's defense system. Of the three original watchtowers from this period, it remains the only surviving structure.
The name comes from Middle High German 'katte', referring to fortifications, a term that still echoes in the region's historical identity. Visitors can trace this linguistic connection directly in how locals refer to this historical structure.
The tower is located on Turmstraße and is easily accessible from the city center. Visitors should note the narrow spiral staircase inside that leads to the upper levels and requires some physical effort.
The tower maintained direct visual contact with the Stumpfer Turm outside the city walls and used light and smoke signals to warn of approaching dangers. This signaling system was essential for rapid response to threats during medieval times.
