Grube Frischglück, Historic iron mine shaft in Neuenbürg, Germany.
Grube Frischglück is a former iron ore mine near Neuenbürg with three excavation levels and extensive underground passages. The tunnels contain deposits of iron ore with elevated manganese content and low sulfur concentration.
The mine operated from 1720 to 1868 and shaped the economic life of the region for more than a century. Extraction methods were continuously refined throughout this long period of activity.
The site reflects how mining shaped the identity of this region and the lives of generations of workers. Visitors can see evidence of their labor preserved in the rock faces and tunnels throughout the excavation.
The site is accessible through guided tours where sturdy footwear and warm clothing are recommended due to consistently low underground temperatures. A visit with children is possible but requires care on uneven surfaces and steep passages.
Certain sections of the mine display untouched ore formations that provide visitors with a view of natural geological processes. These undisturbed zones allow observation of minerals exactly as they were deposited over time.
