Burg Morenhoven, Water castle in Swisttal, Germany
Burg Morenhoven is a water castle in Swisttal featuring a main building and outer bailey ringed by ponds fed by the Mühlenbach stream. The water system creates a natural defense around the structure that flows toward the Swist river.
The Gothic gate tower dates from the late 15th century, while the baroque mansion was built in 1682 after devastation during the Thirty Years' War. The von Jordans family later took ownership and made the castle their home.
Inside, you can see fine wallpapers, ornate plasterwork, and old family portraits hanging in light-filled rooms that show how residents lived during different periods.
The castle remains privately owned by the von Jordans family and is not open for regular visits. You can try contacting in advance to explore whether access might be available for interested visitors.
A stone bridge crosses the moat to reach the outer courtyard, providing a picturesque entry to the grounds. The square medieval gate tower features a distinctive baroque bulbous roof topped with slate that often goes unnoticed.
