Haus Müttinghoven, Water castle in Swisttal, Germany

Haus Müttinghoven is a former knight's castle in Swisttal featuring a seven-part baroque main building topped with a mansard roof. The complex includes half-timbered structures around the outer courtyard, a defensive tower, and lies within grounds of pastures and meadows.

The castle was founded in the late 13th century by the Lords of Müttinghoven as a defensive stronghold. Control later passed to Heisterbach Abbey, which became a major landholder in the region and shaped the property's development.

The residence blends medieval castle features with baroque living spaces, a mix you can see in the architecture today. This combination shows how the lifestyle of nobles transformed over centuries.

The location sits within the Rheinland Nature Park, offering plenty of space for walking across open meadows and pastures. It's best explored from the outside, as the main building is not open to the public, but the architecture and grounds are easily visible from the surrounding paths.

One of the two remaining sections of the original moat was transformed into a pond behind the residential building and is still visible today. This water feature gives the grounds a distinctive character that hints at the castle's former defensive purpose.
