Finkenrieker Friedhof, Cemetery and park in Wilhelmsburg, Germany.
Finkenrieker Friedhof is a cemetery and park in the Wilhelmsburg district that spans both sides of König-Georg-Deich-Straße. The grounds near the Süderelbe river contain approximately 8,500 burial plots.
The grounds opened in 1957 and have served the city as a burial place since then. A chapel with a bell tower stands at the site and features a relief commemorating the 1962 flood victims.
The cemetery brings together different religious communities, especially since the expansion added a Muslim burial section with dedicated washing and prayer facilities. Visitors will notice how the place serves as a meaningful space for various traditions and practices.
To visit the grounds, call ahead to arrange access as the site requires prior arrangement. Parking spaces are limited, so it is helpful to plan your arrival in advance.
The prayer house for Muslim burials was designed by architect Medine Altiok and features separate entrances for men and women. The spaces are specifically oriented toward Mecca to accommodate religious ceremonies.
