Petrikirche, Gothic church in Stendal, Germany.
Petrikirche is a three-nave hall church in Stendal with four bays, a tower on the western side, and a two-bay choir with a pentagonal apse. The building contains a brass chandelier from 1633, a Gothic cabinet with original fittings, and two bronze bells cast in 1490 and 1497.
Construction of Petrikirche began after 1285, with the choir completed in fieldstone by 1306 and the tower finished in 1371. This development reflects Stendal's growing importance as a significant medieval town.
The church displays Gothic artworks including an altar from the 14th century showing Mary's coronation, the twelve apostles, and various saints. These religious works shaped the interior and reflect the devotion that took place here over centuries.
The church is accessible from outside and displays its Gothic brick facade with various details visible from the street. Visitors should note that opening hours vary, so it is helpful to check local information before your visit.
A distinctive feature is the wooden apostle figures in a niche gallery above a semi-height brick wall, representing Christ and his disciples. These carvings show the artistic craftsmanship from an earlier era and remain visible today.
