Röxer Tunnel, Railway tunnel at Stendal Hauptbahnhof, Germany
The Röxer Tunnel is a historic railway tunnel beneath Stendal's main station that originally featured white-tiled walls and timber-framed entrance buildings. The passage connected two streets and later served as a pedestrian link between platforms.
The tunnel was built in 1911 and opened to the public in 1912, initially serving as a simple railway underpass. In 1983 it gained platform access points and was repurposed as a station connector.
The tunnel's name references a local family with historical ties to the region. Visitors can still observe the remaining entrance structures, which speak to the site's former role as an underground connector beneath the railway.
The tunnel cannot be entered as it was filled in during 2021 and is not open to visitors. The remaining entrance structures are visible from outside and serve as reminders of this historical infrastructure.
Before being filled in, the tunnel walls displayed 60 colored circles showing chronological dates from Stendal's history and its railway station. Local groups now propose converting the remaining entrance buildings into a reading and light house.
