Winckelmann-Denkmal, Bronze architectural monument in Stendal, Germany.

The Winckelmann-Denkmal is a late-classicist bronze figure of Johann Joachim Winckelmann on a tall stone pedestal, set in the middle of Winckelmannplatz opposite St. Mary's Church in Stendal's old town. The design goes back to a draft by Ludwig Wichmann from 1843, and the monument was built between 1846 and 1859.

The monument was created in 1859 by sculptor Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann to commemorate an 18th-century scholar. This subject revolutionized how people studied ancient cultures by introducing organized and systematic methods to archaeology.

The square was renamed Winckelmannplatz in 1859, the same year the monument was inaugurated. The bronze figure stands on a high stone pedestal bearing two inscriptions: at its foot "Johann Joachim Winckelmann von seinen Verehrern", and on the pedestal a dedication to the researcher and eloquent proclaimer of the art of antiquity, with his birth in Stendal on 9 December 1717 and death in Trieste on 8 June 1768.

The monument stands in the central district of Stendal and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should allow a few moments to read the inscriptions on the base and examine the details of the bronze figure up close.

The monument's entry in the local heritage register is number 094 18306. The square itself was renamed Winckelmannplatz in 1859, the same year the monument was inaugurated, so the place name and the memorial date from one and the same decision.
