Wat Buddhavihara, Thai Buddhist temple in Heinersdorf, Berlin, Germany

Wat Buddhavihara is a Theravada Buddhist temple and monastery at Malchower Straße in Heinersdorf, run by the Thai Buddhist Association of Berlin. The grounds are a former 21,700 m² industrial site bought in 2011, with a renovated main house and temporary meditation and living quarters (kuti) in barracks. In June 2023 the sacred boundary of the future ubosot, the ordination hall, was marked in the Fang Luk Nimit ceremony.

The temple was founded in the late twentieth century as the Thai population in Berlin grew and sought a dedicated place for religious practice. This establishment marked a significant moment for the formalization of Buddhism in the city and the creation of a stable community structure.

The temple serves as a gathering place where the local Thai community and German residents come together to practice Buddhism and celebrate shared traditions. Visitors can experience how Buddhist practices shape daily life and social bonds within this diverse group.

The temple is at Malchower Straße in Heinersdorf, on a 21,700 m² former industrial site bought in 2011. Guests are welcome at religious festivals and ceremonies, including Songkran in April. The main house was renovated while meditation and living quarters (Kuti) were housed in barracks.

In June 2023 the monastery marked out the sacred boundary of its future Ubosot, the ordination hall, with the Fang Luk Nimit ceremony, in which boundary stones are buried or placed at fixed points. The site on Malchower Straße is a former industrial plot of 21,700 m² bought by the association in December 2011 for one million euros.
