Fehmarn Belt Tunnel, Transport tunnel between Lolland and Fehmarn, Germany.
The Fehmarn Belt Tunnel is an infrastructure project linking the Danish island of Lolland and the German island of Fehmarn, stretching roughly 18 kilometers beneath the water. It includes separate tubes for road traffic and railways, built by placing large prefabricated sections on the sea floor.
The first proposals for a fixed link across the water between Hamburg and Copenhagen appeared in the 19th century. Official construction of the tunnel began in 2021 after years of preparation and international negotiations.
The tunnel project strengthens the connection between Central Europe and Scandinavia, creating new opportunities for cross-border cooperation and regional development.
Construction is progressing on schedule with an expected opening in 2029, which will replace the current ferry service between the islands. Visitors can follow construction updates online, while multiple production lines simultaneously work on tunnel elements.
A sealed time capsule containing messages and items for future generations lies inside one of the tunnel sections. The factory on Lolland uses robotic technology to weld steel rods, a method rarely applied at this scale before.
