Panzerwiese, Protected heath in Milbertshofen-Am Hart, Munich, Germany
Panzerwiese is a protected heath area in Munich covering 200 hectares of open land with nutrient-poor soil that supports diverse plant life. The treeless terrain stretches across the landscape, creating distinct habitat conditions for specialized vegetation.
The area served as a military training ground called Warner Kaserne until the late 1980s, with an airfield named Warner Strip that closed in the 1960s. Following the end of military use, the land was designated for nature protection.
The name Panzerwiese refers to its military training ground past, which shaped the open landscape we see today. This heritage is now managed through conservation efforts that keep the area open and welcoming to visitors seeking natural spaces.
The area is easily reached via the U2 underground line, with entry points along Schleißheimer Straße and Ingolstädter Straße. The open landscape allows for free exploration and observation throughout the year without formal restrictions.
Sheep graze on the heath in early summer as part of management to maintain the open landscape and plant diversity. This traditional practice helps preserve more than 180 plant species, including rare varieties found nowhere else nearby.
