Teufelsloch

Teufelsloch is a natural cave forming part of the Teufelsmauer rock formation in Saxony-Anhalt, characterized by distinctive sandstone structures. The cave sits within a larger rock massif that displays striking geological features across the landscape.

The cave formed through natural erosion over millions of years and gained protection in the 19th century when authorities recognized the need to preserve the sandstone formations from heavy quarrying. This protected status acknowledged the site's geological importance.

Access is via a marked hiking trail of about 7 kilometers starting from the Schnappelberg parking lot in Blankenburg, near the historic castle. Bring weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear since the path crosses varied terrain.

The cave entrance offers views of rock formations shaped over about 85 million years by wind and water. These enormous timescales become tangible when observing the intricate stone details up close.
