Rittertreppe, Stone stairway in Blankenburg, Germany
Rittertreppe is a stone stairway with 41 steps carved directly into the rock face of the Teufelsmauer near Timmenrode. The steps climb steeply upward and provide access to higher sections of the rock formation.
The stairway dates to medieval times and once led to a small castle perched on the rock formation. Over the centuries, the fortress disappeared, but the steps have survived.
The steps feature ancient carvings along their sides, particularly a cross etched into the stone. These marks tell stories of people who traveled this path long ago.
The climb requires careful footing and sturdy shoes with good grip, as the steps are old and sometimes slippery. Visitors should ascend slowly and avoid the site during rain or wet conditions.
This stairway connects two separate sections and leads to a large rock opening of the Teufelsloch cave. The lower portion contains 13 steps, while the upper section comprises 28 steps.
