Die Fremden, Contemporary sculpture at Musik- und Kongresshalle, Lübeck, Germany
Die Fremden is a contemporary sculpture consisting of multiple angular human figures positioned on the roof of the Musik- und Kongresshalle. The work is visible from numerous vantage points throughout Lübeck's city center and forms a striking silhouette against the sky.
The sculpture was created in the early 1990s as part of an architectural competition with substantial support from the Possehl Foundation. From 2015 onward, it remained in place while the concert hall underwent major renovations due to structural risks.
The figures represent people who must leave their home countries to start new lives elsewhere. They address themes of migration and displacement in the public space.
The sculpture can be viewed from the exterior of the Musik- und Kongresshalle and is best seen from multiple vantage points throughout the city. Visiting on a clear day allows for the best viewing of the rooftop figures against the sky.
The figures were never removed during the renovation period, even as the building beneath them underwent major structural work. This made the sculpture serve as a visual anchor point throughout the extensive transformation of the hall.
