Elisabethhospital

Elisabethhospital is a cultural heritage building in Kassel featuring decorative sandstone sculptures on its facade. A relief carving of the Hessian coat of arms adorns the corner at Oberengasse street.

Founded in 1297 by Mechthild von Kleve, wife of Landgraf Heinrich I, the building started as a two-story structure with stepped gables. In 1586, Landgraf Wilhelm IV commissioned architect Christoph Müller to rebuild it as a Renaissance structure using quarry stones with dressed corner blocks.

The building honors Saint Elisabeth, the patron saint of the sick, in its name and purpose. An upper floor room once functioned as both a patient ward and a place of worship.

The building now houses residential apartments and a restaurant, so visitors can view the historic architecture from outside and potentially dine on site. The sandstone details on the facade are best seen in daylight.

The building was constructed from rough quarry stones combined with carefully dressed corner blocks, a mix that gave the Renaissance structure its distinctive character. This combination of raw and finished materials creates visual depth across the facade.
